Large Eddy Simulation Technology: CharLES
Cascade CharLES software represents the most advanced generation of simulation technology for industrial applications.
CharLES has been developed specifically to perform LES calculations. The numerical schemes embedded in CharLES are designed to provide an accurate representation of turbulent fluctuations without introducing any artificial damping (numerical dissipation). Substantial effort has been devoted to the efficiency of the algorithms and their applicability to large scale parallel computations (of the order of 1000 processors). Various physical models in CharLES (sub-grid scale models, combustion models, spray dynamics, etc.) are modified and enhanced to take advantage of the wealth of information provided by the direct representation of large scale turbulent motions. No adjustable coefficients are used and therefore no ad-hoc tuning is required.
The accuracy and speed of CharLES are the key competitive advantages over currently available commercial CFD codes, which are based on RANS type algorithms adjusted to perform LES simulations.
